Chris Sutton fires new jibe at West Ham United after loss v Chelsea

Chris Sutton has fired a new jibe at West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui following the Hammers’ defeat to Chelsea.

The Hammers’ miserable start to the Premier League season continued with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Enzo Maresca’s side at the London Stadium on Saturday (21 September).

Most Irons supporters were excited to see a new attacking brand of football under the management of Lopetegui following David Moyes’ exit, but BBC Sport pundit Sutton has been quick to poke fun at the “new” West Ham.

Writing on X on Saturday (21 September) he said: “The new West Ham way…”

Will West Ham sack Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium?

Moyes’ defensive football drew plenty of criticism for not being the “West Ham way” last season, but it feels as though most supporters are pining for the days of the Scotsman following Saturday afternoon’s bleak display.

There seemed to be no pattern of play or cohesion to the Hammers’ display both in attack and defence as they were easily pulled apart by a Chelsea side that had started the season poorly themselves under Maresca.

Something needs to change quickly for Lopetegui to find a way to win over the Irons’ support. Most fans and pundits expected the Hammers to be challenging for the European places this term, not competing in another relegation battle.

There is still plenty of football to be played and time for the former Real Madrid boss to turn things around, but the early signs suggest this isn’t going to be as smooth a transition back to the Hammers way as some fans would have been hoping for.

Hopefully, the issues on show in the opening few weeks of the season have just been some teething problems as the Hammers adapt to life under their new manager.

A win before the next international break is definitely needed.
