Chris Sutton calls Robbie Savage a ‘hypocrite’ over West Ham United sack comments

Chris Sutton branded Robbie Savage a “hypocrite” after his claims he would give Julen Lopetegui time at West Ham United.

Savage agreed with a Hammers supporter live on the BBC 606 Football Phone-In [27 October], who had called in to state it is unfair to judge the Spaniard so soon.

Sutton batted back at the now-Macclesfield Town head coach, who in his previous role as the club’s director of football sacked Mark Duffy from the job after just 18 games in charge last year.

“That’s interesting. Do you agree, Rob?” Sutton said after the fan laid out his view on Lopetegui.

“Yes, 100%, give him time,” Savage replied.

“You sacked a manager after about three games as director of football,” Sutton gleefully launched back.

“There you are, nodding along – you’re just a hypocrite, Savage.”

West Ham United need to give Julen Lopetegui a fair timeframe

For any club to succeed on the field, chopping and changing managers has been shown rarely to be a sustainable way of accelerating it.

Not only have the Hammers changed their gaffer at the London Stadium after the four-and-a-half-year stint of David Moyes, but they have readjusted their entire model to become a head coach-driven project, with recruitment staff working parallel.

While this transition was always going to take time, fans have been rightly frustrated at some of the inconsistent performances shown during the season so far – some from the players, and other times from Lopetegui’s team selection.

But as seen at many clubs down the years, to rip up the floorboards at the slightest hint towards a lack of future success is usually a hasty and expensive decision.

Lopetegui now looks to two matches before the international break, against three-unbeaten Nottingham Forest [2 November] and five-unbeaten Everton [5 November].

In other West Ham news, a move is considered for a player who took European football by storm last season.
