Chelsea beat West Ham United to hiring Frank Lampard as terms agreed

West Ham United were beaten to the appointment of Frank Lampard after he was named Chelsea’s interim boss, according to the Daily Mail.

The Hammers’ former midfielder was named as Graham Potter’s interim successor on Thursday (6 April), taking over until the end of the 2022/23 season.

David Moyes’ is currently clinging onto his job at the London Stadium, with The Sun claiming (6 April) he is under increasing pressure.

The Mail report (6 April) that Lampard was a “candidate” to replace Moyes in East London due to his affiliation with the club and his willingness to use youth prospects.

Bullet dodged

It’s fair to say, West Ham dodged a bullet. Lampard has taken the Chelsea job because it’s a caretaker role. It gives Todd Boehly and the board time to properly reassess candidates before making a long-term decision. The London Stadium faithful would’ve been fairly aggrieved had the 44-year-old been given the job on a full-time basis.

But, at the moment, change is needed. The 5-1 hammering to Newcastle was a low point in the 2022/23 season and the players need a fresh approach. Relegation is now a genuine possibility with Moyes in charge.

There’s been a lot of talk on the lack of options available who could potentially takeover, but a fresh approach and ideas could see West Ham finally hit a run of consistent form.

Once again, Moyes is on the brink, with Saturday’s fixture away at Fulham yet another must-win game for the West Ham boss. He’s been on the edge before during this campaign and he desperately needs a result to keep his job at the London Stadium.
