BT Sport pundit tells Declan Rice why to stay to stay at West Ham
Joe Cole has warned Declan Rice against making a big-money move to Manchester United, saying he risks “still not winning trophies”.
The star midfielder appeared to hint that he wanted a move after the 1-0 loss at Old Trafford with his post-match comments, and has been linked with a £100million move (Mirror).
But ex-Hammer Cole sees no real benefit considering the development at the London Stadium compared to the Red Devils.
“I think if Man City were on the table, you’d go there because in recent years it guarantees you trophies and I think Declan would want that.
“But for me, there’s no reason for him to not stay at West Ham if the progress is still going in that pattern, but that’s for him and the owners.”
This weekend’s developments involving the Hammers and their Manchester opponents have been almost universally negative from an East London perspective.
Not only were David Moyes’ side unfortunate to leave Old Trafford empty handed but speculation about arguably their best player leaving ramped up.
Against a key rival for the Champions League qualification spots, a 93rd-minute winner from Marcus Rashford stole the points with a goal that included controversy over a potential offside involving Edinson Cavani.
The results took the home side above West Ham into fourth, and Rice’s subsequent comments about the stadium being “one of [his] favourite places to play” (via Daily Mail) only added to the view that he will be moving on before long.
Cole’s point is relevant as the red half of Manchester has not been overly successful in recent years, despite huge investment, but if that just means the England star heads to the blue half it will not bring much comfort.
In other West Ham news, this talkSPORT is thrilled by the prospect of a huge Hammers bid for a PL star.
