Brentford approach for Aaron Hickey makes West Ham United transfer chances even harder

Brentford have made an approach for Bologna’s Aaron Hickey – and that could be a blow for West Ham who have shown interest in the 20-year-old defender.

As revealed by the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath on his personal Twitter account on Friday 10 June, the Bees have made an approach for the Scottish left back.

The Sun reported on Wednesday [8 June], that Hickey was under consideration as a potential left-back option for West Ham.

However, McGrath revealed that the Bees are the only side to make an official approach for the defender.

He wrote on Twitter: “Brentford have made an approach for Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey.

“Other Premier League clubs are interested in Scotland international but no other club-to-club contact yet.

“Player valued at around €25m”

This seems like a signing that the Hammers are not really committed to pursuing properly and that’s surprising.

Hickey is a young player who would be a first-team option immediately and for the future for West Ham.

£21million for a 20-year-old full-back with five goals and one assist looks like good business, which is probably why it’s not a surprise Brentford are actively looking to sign the young Scot.

Thomas Frank and Brentford rarely get their transfer business wrong and their interest should highlight to David Moyes that Hickey is a talented player who could make an immediate difference at The London Stadium.

With Aaron Cresswell turning 33 this year, Moyes certainly needs to be in the market for a left-back who will be able to challenge the veteran and then eventually take his starting berth.

Hickey seems like the ideal candidate but if the Hammers wait too long a move for the Scot will come far too late.

In other West Ham news, we could now have a free run at signing Alphonse Areola permanently as this Premier League club have found a free alternative.
