Atalanta open to idea of letting West Ham target Joakim Maehle leave – report
Atalanta are ready to let West Ham United target right-back Joakim Maehle leave the club in the ongoing transfer window, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.
The defender is one of the priorities of David Moyes this summer as he is keen to have a solid defensive unit ahead of the campaign.
As per the latest report, Maehle has not been put on a transfer list by Atalanta but they are not against the idea of letting the player leave for a sizeable offer to reinvest in the squad.
Denmark International has three years left on his deal with the Italian club and is valued at £12 million, according to Transfermarkt.
Maehle has been an important player, both at the club level as well as for the national team. In the recently concluded Serie A season, he made 26 appearances for Atalanta. He averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, and 0.3 clearances per game [Whoscored].
The Denmark International also averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, and 0.8 clearances per game in the 2021 European Championships.
If we look at the technical side, the player will add personality to the dressing room. He will be one of those players who will go into every single game with the ambition of winning it regardless of what stadium he is in.
If we look at the football side, the 25-year-old will preferably play as a right-back. He will give competition to Ben Johnson, who was outstanding for the Hammers in the last season.
Moyes understands that he cannot go into another European competition without a decent squad depth.
Therefore, he has to ensure that he has competition within every position in the line-up and signing someone like Maehle will be a step in that direction.
