Arsenal set to receive £1.7m financial windfall after West Ham United transfer news

Arsenal are set to receive a £1.7million windfall after West Ham signed Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart, according to the Mirror.

The publication reported on its website on Wednesday (23 August) that the Gunners installed a sell-on clause in his Stuttgart contract after selling him to the German club.

Greek international Mavropanos made eight appearances for Arsenal before his switch to Stuttgart, where he made 89 appearances.

“Arsenal are set to receive a £1.7million windfall from West Ham after the Hammers completed the signing of Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart,” according to the Mirror.

“The 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the London Stadium and becomes their third major arrival of the summer.”

Smart move

It was a smart move from Premier League giants to insert the clause, with the Gunners clearly having viewed the player as one for the future, even if he didn’t quite make it in North London.

The centre-back went on to shine in Germany with Stuttgart, but he is now back in England and back in London, with West Ham bolstering their defence with his signature.

It remains to be seen, however, exactly what role Hammers manager David Moyes has in mind for the 25-year-old. The boss has relied on the centre-back pairing of Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma for the first two matches of the new Premier League season.

But Mavropanos could be thrown straight into the action when West Ham travel to high-flying Brighton on Saturday (26 August), given how Aguerd will be suspended following his red card against Chelsea on Sunday (20 August).

If that is the case, the Greek defender will be in for a busy afternoon, with Brighton’s attackers starting the season in superb fashion.

In other West Ham news, James Ward-Prowse had a debut to remember as he broke a Premier League record against Chelsea.
