Arsenal ace Declan Rice makes £5k donation to West Ham United teen fighting cancer
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has donated £5,000 towards cancer treatment for West Ham United academy goalkeeper Oscar Fairs.
The U14 goalkeeper has been with the Hammers since the age of six and is currently fighting a rare form of brain cancer.
His family set up a GoFundMe campaign to help get Oscar the treatment he deserves and have currently raised £51,461 of the £100,000 goal, with former Hammers hero Rice contributing towards that.
West Ham United band together to help Oscar Fairs
Fairs is a brave young man and his story is gut-wrenching fighting cancer at such a young age.
The teenager has been a West Ham season ticket holder all his life and has dreams of reaching the first team in his later years [Rising Ballers, 29 August].
The sooner the GoFundMe reaches the £100,000 goal, the sooner Fairs can begin his treatment against his rare form of cancer.
Fellow West Ham players past and present should follow the example set by former captain Rice and donate whatever they can to help the family achieve their goal ASAP.
It is times like these when football needs to be set aside and the club needs to band together and use whatever resources are available to help Fairs.
In the current state of the UK economy, not all football fans will be able to spare the money to donate to the cause, but former players, managers and anyone involved in the sport will be able to surpass the £100,000 target overnight.
Fairs’ story, while heartbreaking, needs to be heard and the GoFundMe shared far and wide to implore anyone with disposable income to donate if they can, and help the young man receive life-saving treatment and fulfil his dream of one day playing first-team football for West Ham.
