Arne Slot set to axe Mohamed Salah for Liverpool v West Ham United tie

Arne Slot is set to make widespread changes when Liverpool host West Ham United in the EFL Cup, according to Ian Doyle.

The Liverpool Echo journalist shared his predicted Liverpool lineup on Monday [23 September] and suggested that Slot could drop Mohamed Salah among others for the midweek clash.

Indeed, Doyle suggests Slot could change his entire starting line-up on the back of the 3-0 win over Bournemouth at the weekend.

Julen Lopetegui will hope to avoid repeating last season’s quarter-final clash between the two sides under David Moyes with the Hammers falling to a 5-1 defeat at Anfield.

West Ham United face a tough trip to Liverpool

Life in East London for Lopetegui has been far from easy, with the 3-0 loss to Chelsea at the London Stadium over the weekend ramping up the pressure on the boss only five matches into the new season.

West Ham have managed one win, and an early Carabao Cup exit albeit to a high-flying Liverpool side could be the final nail in the coffin for Lopetegui, with David Sullivan and Karen Brady far from impressed by what they have seen under the new boss [BBC Radio 5 Live].

Tim Steidten led a squad overhaul for the Hammers over the summer, but only a handful have been awarded regular minutes this season and the European aspirations that came with the influx of signings now look more like a pipe dream unless something drastically changes.

Whether or not the West Ham board are seriously considering their choice to appoint the 58-year-old remains to be seen and, while he has had to face a tough run of Aston Villa, Manchester City and Chelsea, there is no hiding from the fact that the performances have been a concern.

Lopetegui will be expected to field a strong side at Anfield and should Doyle be correct in his prediction for a highly-rotated Liverpool side, the Irons will fancy their chances to progress in the Carabao Cup. Failure to do so would be a damning recognition of his credentials.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have been told to be ‘careful what they wish for’ with a David Moyes return mooted.
