Anton Ferdinand wowed by West Ham United ace Edson Alvarez in cameo appearance against Chelsea

Anton Ferdinand was impressed by what he saw from new West Ham signing Edson Alvarez in the victory against Chelsea on Sunday (20 August).

Speaking on the VIBE with FIVE YouTube Channel on 23 August, the former Hammers defender said the Mexican international has “what it takes” to play for the club after his performance off the bench against the Blues.

He added that he believes that the 25-year-old has been told and understands what he has to do to earn the love of the Irons fans during his time at the London Stadium.

“It’s almost like he’s been told what it takes to be a West Ham player and play in front of them fans,” said Ferdinand. “Because what we saw in that cameo that he played on the weekend was someone who runs first, plays second.

“In recent years, signings that we’ve had haven’t understood that. Whereas it’s almost like this guy understands, he’s been told that for you to get love at West Ham, this is what you have got to do.”

Solid

It looked like in what was a very brief cameo against Chelsea on Sunday that West Ham have made a solid signing in bringing in Alvarez.

The Hammers confirmed the signing of the Mexican on 10 August after agreeing a deal with Ajax worth a reported £35.4million after pursuing him for a number of weeks.

They had been keen to add a presence in the midfield that would be able to do a job in front of the defence after Declan Rice left for Arsenal and the early signs are that they have managed to do just that.

West Ham

Ferdinand was clearly impressed by the attitude that Alvarez showed on his debut and, after making the grade at the club, he will know what it takes to play in front of the fans.

While we like to see our players show quality on the ball and do special things, the number one ask that they give everything for the shirt and it looks as though the midfielder gets that.
