Anton Ferdinand reacts as West Ham respond to European Super League folding

West Ham have thanked their supporters after all six Premier League clubs backed out of the controversial European Super League overnight.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have confirmed they will no longer participate in the ESL after widespread condemnation.

West Ham’s official Instagram account shared an image that said: “Thank you to our fans for your unwavering support.

“We are stronger together. We are West Ham United.”

The Hammers also added a caption to the image, saying that the fight should now be turned towards eradicating racism from the sport.

“Let’s get back to focusing on what’s important and stand together to show that there is No Room For Racism,” said the post.

Ex-Irons defender Anton Ferdinand replied to the post with a simple two-word message. He said: “My club.”

Back to business

With the ESL now looking as though it’s going to be consigned to footballing history, it’s time for everyone to get back to business.

West Ham’s reminder that the fight against racism must continue is a very good message because that has been a massive issue in football.

In recent weeks, it feels as though black players are being racially abused after every single game through social media.

While social media ‘blackouts’ are one way of dealing with the seemingly growing issue, it begs the question, ‘do Twitter and Facebook really care?’.

Rangers, Swansea and Birmingham have all done these blackouts which have now ended. What difference did it make?

None.

We applaud them for trying but something needs to happen where all clubs get together to take part. All clubs need to take an indefinite break from social media to make companies step up and realise how big an issue this actually is.

The ESL was a distraction for a few days but now, the fight against racism is back on.
