Andy Townsend lauds West Ham ace Andriy Yarmolenko for stunning goal v Netherlands
TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend waxed lyrical of West Ham attacker Andriy Yarmolenko for his goal against the Netherlands on Sunday.
The out of favour West Ham winger silenced his critics with a wonderful display in their EUROs opener, despite Ukraine losing the contest 3-2.
He was a constant threat down the right flank for Andriy Shevchenko’s side and capped off his performance with a brilliant long-range effort to make the score 2-1 at the time.
During his commentary for the Euro 2020 world feed, Townsend reacted hysterically to one of the best goals of the competition thus far.
He said, “That is a stunning goal from Yarmolenko. It’s pure quality. Absolutely special.
“What a wonderful finish. The way he steps inside, has a look and puts the ball into the back of the net is fantastic.
“Just what Ukraine needed at this late stage in the game.”
Just what he needed
Yarmolenko has had his fair share of critics in the past, and rightly so, given how he’s struggled to maintain his fitness and even when fit has been highly inconsistent since moving to West Ham.
He’s likely to be shown the door this summer so it’s good for him that he’s started to perform ahead of what could be a huge window for him.

It would work out in his best interests as if he has a good month, the number of clubs keen on signing him would increase.
The Hammers would also be benefited a great deal as they could drive up the price for the Ukraine international.
This would see us get a few additional quid than we would’ve previously imagined, and it could lead to us matching the valuation of a player that would’ve otherwise not been possible.
Still early in the tournament, but so far so good.
