Andy Gray blames big signings for West Ham’s struggles this season

There’s no one thing behind West Ham United’s struggles this season. Rather, it’s been a combination of a number of different issues.

You could pinpoint the mistakes made by former manager Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos, of course.

The signing of goalkeeping disaster Roberto was obviously disastrous for the Hammers, while injuries to Lukasz Fabianski and Michail Antonio were costly too.

All of those things and more taken together can be identified as the source of the east London outfit’s struggles.

Former Scotland international Andy Gray believes that he has put his finger on a big issue the Hammers have had this campaign.

“They spent so much money and, if you look at the return they’ve had for what they’ve outlaid and their expense…,” he said on beIN SPORTS.

“Felipe Anderson had a good season last year, he was very good. I thought he had a really good season his initial season in the Premier League. He hasn’t managed to keep his levels where they were. He’s dipped off, and we don’t know what we’re going to get from him.

“Sebastien Haller, another one. Came with a decent reputation, decent centre forward. Looked OK at the beginning, but has struggled to get goals.

“So their expenditure and their outlay, it hasn’t been rewarded with performances from the new players.”

Does Gray have a point?

He’s right that some of the club’s bigger signings in recent times haven’t produced this time round.

Although Pablo Fornals had been a big success after a rocky start, Haller has been woeful over the past few months.

Meanwhile, Anderson simply hasn’t reached the heights of his fantastic debut campaign in English football.

So, yes, the team’s big spending probably hasn’t been rewarded in this particular campaign.
