Andriy Yarmolenko gave West Ham shirt to fan with Ukrainian flag after goal against Sevilla

Andriy Yarmolenko gave his shirt to a fan in the crowd holding a Ukrainian flag after his goal sent West Ham through against Sevilla, talkSPORT reports.

On a momentous night at the London Stadium, the Hammers star scored for the second match running after his return to the team, having missed time for personal reasons after the Russian invasion of his home country.

The 32-year-old turned in the rebound in extra time to give the Irons a 2-0 win on the night and knock their La Liga opponents out on aggregate.

On an emotional night for many inside the stadium because of the sporting achievement, the effect was heightened for the goalscorer due to the turmoil in his home country, and was illustrated when he sought out the fan with the flag in what talkSPORT called a “touching moment”.

Declan Rice told BT Sport after the final whistle: “I’ve just seen him in the kit-room. He was a little bit emotional. He was away from the lads, just to take it in.”

Incredible scenes

It could hardly have been written any better for the struggling Hammers winger to be the man to send the side through.

While it might be therapeutic for him to spend a brief period of time running on instinct on the football pitch, the gravity of what is occurring elsewhere clearly doesn’t leave his mind.

He was subdued in celebration of the goal and the final whistle in what were understandably bitter-sweet moments for him.

Overturning the 1-0 deficit from the first leg represents an excellent achievement for the players, as David Moyes continues to get the best out of this team.

However, he will have to guard against a drop in adrenaline for the return to domestic action.

But with just eight teams left in the competition however, he and the players would not be human if the actual trophy hadn’t started to cross their mind.

In other West Ham news, Spanish newspapers reacted to the result at the London Stadium.
