Alistair Bruce-Ball and Leon Osman rave about Aaron Cresswell v West Brom
BBC commentators Alistair Bruce-Ball and Leon Osman were amazed by Aaron Cresswell after he almost gave West Ham the lead over West Brom.
With the scores level in the second half Cresswell produced a genius free-kick which almost caught out Sam Johnstone.
The West Brom keeper left the goal gaping in anticipation that Cresswell would cross the ball but instead the left-back went for goal and struck the outside of the post.
Covering the game for BBC 5 Live, Bruce-Ball said, “Sam Johnstone completely caught out. That was a fabulous strike, it bent a mile and he’s clipped the outside of the post.
And pundit Osman was in agreement, adding, “Johnstone just expected that it was going to be delivered into a dangerous area, Cresswell just spotted that he went early and it was a terrific effort.”
Lack of quality
Cresswell’s strike was probably the best bit of quality all night in a disappointing performance from the Hammers, despite winning.
We had our best attackers available yet still looked short of ideas against an already relegated West Brom team.
That is very disappointing and it highlights the need for a new striker in the summer.
It also indicates that the board’s failure to invest in January has come back to haunt us.
Our small squad was always likely to show fatigue in the latter stages and despite their best efforts it has been impossible to perform to a high standard in every game.
We hope GSB learn from this mistake but somehow we do not see that happening.
One last effort on Sunday to get at least a point against Southampton will be enough to get us into Europe, though that will of course bring about an even busier schedule in the next campaign.
