Alex Crook makes ‘very unusual’ claim after Jarrod Bowen signs new West Ham United contract

It is “very unusual” for Premier League clubs to hand out a deal like the one West Ham have given Jarrod Bowen due to his age, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.

The winger has signed a new long-term deal at the London Stadium until 2030, as per the official West Ham website (8 October).

Bowen, 26, signed for the Hammers from Hull City in January 2020, and has made 167 appearances in claret and blue.

“It takes him to his 33rd birthday,” Crook said live on talkSPORT. “It’s very unusual for Premier League clubs now to give that kind of deal to somebody once they get into their thirties.

“I know he’s not there yet but he will be by the end of it. Obviously he has become a bit of a West Ham icon. Scored the goal that ended their long trophy drought. Why wouldn’t he stay?”

Great decision

Bowen has been linked with an exit from East London in recent times, but those rumours have been shut down with this new deal.

He may have been tempted with a switch to a Premier League giants, having watched his former teammate and club legend Declan Rice join Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

And while Rice has settled in superbly in North London, it may not be the same for Bowen if he were to leave the Hammers.

The winger certainly seems happy in claret and blue, and has essentially earned cult hero status at the club thanks to his goal in last season’s Europa Conference League final.

He has already made plenty of unforgettable memories during his time with the Hammers, with the attacker keen on making more in the years to come.

Bowen has started the new season in superb fashion, with the forward netting five goals from his eight Premier League matches so far.
