Alan Shearer slaughters Manchester United after what MOTD showed v West Ham, ‘really embarrassing’

Alan Shearer has slaughtered Manchester United labelling them “really embarrassing” after Match of the Day shared a new stat following their defeat to West Ham United.

David Moyes’ side climbed to sixth in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over the Red Devils at the London Stadium on Saturday (23 December) thanks to second-half strikes from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.

While the Hammers’ attacking display was impressive, Manchester United’s left plenty to be desired and Shearer slammed the away side after a graphic revealed their front three had scored one goal this season, compared to the Irons’ 19.

Speaking on Match of the Day (23 December, 1:02:30) he said: “It’s really embarrassing from a Manchester United point of view. 18 goals this season they’ve scored.

“Ten Hag says, ‘no we’ve got to stick to the plan’. I haven’t got a clue what that plan is, to be honest, and I’ve been watching Manchester United quite a bit this season.”

Bowen’s on fire

While the main takeaway from this graphic is just how poor Manchester United have been in front of goal this season, it is also a big demonstration of just how good West Ham and in particular, their attacking players, have been in the final third.

Bowen has now registered 11 Premier League goals before Christmas and has taken to his new role as the Irons’ number nine like a duck to water. His goal record is what most supporters expect of the Manchester United centre-forward, not West Ham’s right winger.

On top of that, Kudus has been a revelation since arriving from Ajax. The Ghanaian international is electric on the ball and has caused almost every defence that he’s faced plenty of problems. He’s given West Ham an extra dimension in attack that they haven’t had in recent seasons.

The Red Devils’ record may be embarrassing and Shearer is right to slaughter the United frontline for their performances so far this season, but the Hammers are deserving of plenty of praise for their attacking exploits in the opening months of the campaign.
