Alan Shearer selects West Ham defender in Premier League TOTW
Alan Shearer has selected West Ham United defender Aaron Cresswell in his Premier League Team of the Week.
The Hammers secured a last-gasp victory over Fulham at the London Stadium, although they can thank Ademola Lookman for his hilarious penalty.
Cresswell hit the bar in the game and was unlucky not to find the back of the net as the Irons battled to a well-earned three points.
Shearer was full of praise for Cresswell, claiming that his “superb” deliveries are becoming a real weapon for the Hammers.
“He is having a great season,” he wrote in his Premier League column.
“He provides superb deliveries for the forwards and is sound defensively.”
Cresswell’s defensive skills have been questioned in the past, although this latest clean-sheet has seen him earn praise from the likes of Shearer.
Looking at Cresswell’s performance against Fulham, the improvement is clear to see.
Defensively, the 30-year-old won half of his aerial duels despite facing Aleksandar Mitrovic, and also made two clearances and three interceptions.
Going forward, the defender also assisted five shots on goal and made three progressive runs according to WyScout.
The move from left-back into the heart of defence has clearly given Cresswell a new lease of life, and long may it continue.
Gary Lineker has also suggested he could be closing in on an England call-up, although we doubt that could be around the corner.
