Alan Shearer in disbelief at what he saw in Tottenham v West Ham as Lopetegui claim made

Alan Shearer was left in disbelief by West Ham United ace Mohammed Kudus as he chose to get into a spat with some Tottenham players in their 4-1 away loss on Saturday (19 October).

The attacker’s outburst was one of the main talking points from the game, with further action likely to be taken due to the severity of the situation.

Speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast (21 October), Shearer shared his thoughts on the punch-up and also gave his verdict on where this loss leaves Julen Lopetegui’s future.

“Kudus got sent off at the end,” Gary Lineker said, to which Shearer replied: “Oh my God.”

Later in the podcast, Shearer and Lineker shared their stances on West Ham’s season thus far and what the Hammers should do about Lopetegui.

“West Ham are struggling under Lopetegui so far. Obviously he was heavily backed in the summer as well,” Lineker said.

“I don’t know how many times we said about the grumbles about David Moyes and be careful what you wish for and that kind of thing, but it’s early days for Lopetegui and we need to give him time. But they’re kind of shipping in a few goals aren’t they.”

Shearer then replied: “Yeah they are, I mean they do look iffy defensively. They had a good result two weeks ago against against Ipswich at home where they scored four.

“They go 1–0 up but yeah it would be slightly concerning the way they ship their goals where one went in and you’re thinking okay it’s not a disaster but then another and another soon after.

“You’re thinking, that would be a little bit of a concern but yeah, they backed him heavily in the summer and they have to be a little bit patient with him.”

Julen Lopetegui needs to pick up the form of West Ham United

Of all the Premier League teams this season, West Ham are the ones that have arguably underperformed the most.

The Hammers spent big in the summer and bolstered key areas within their squad. However, their heavy spending hasn’t helped matters much and if anything, they seem to be worse now than they were under David Moyes.

Kudus’ underperformance this term likely hasn’t helped matters much but others in the team should be able to pick up the slack, like Jarrod Bowen has done each week.

If Lopetegui can’t get things to turn around soon, we could see the Spaniard as the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season, which obviously wouldn’t be good for either party.

Things can turn around in an instant in football and if the Hammers can find the goalscoring prowess they showed against Ipswich before the international break, they’ll be more than safe.

At the moment, though, it doesn’t feel like there’s any sort of cohesion within the club and they seem to be slipping lower and lower down the table.
