Alan Shearer hits out at sack talk for West Ham United boss David Moyes

Alan Shearer has hit out at suggestions that David Moyes could be facing the sack at West Ham after the Hammers earned a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on 12 November.

Shearer slammed the noise as rubbish and claimed the boss was doing a great job given their position in the table and everything he has achieved with the club so far.

This comes as reports have suggested the Hammers have become frustrated with Moyes’ management and may be looking to head in a new direction when his contract expires in the summer.

Shearer was speaking live on Match of the Day 2 [12 November, 36:00] when host Mark Chapman commented: “Any noise about West Ham appears to be external, every time David Moyes is being asked he’s like ‘Well hang on a minute, we’re in the top half, we’re in the Europa League…'”

Shearer then replied emphatically: “I don’t think you can listen to that rubbish, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. I’m a big admirer of his.”

Results may be papering over the cracks

While poor results are always the root cause of any sack talk in the Premier League, and the poor run the Hammers were on was likely the catalyst for any suggestions of getting rid of Moyes, the lack of wins was not the only reason this idea had been floated.

A report from Claret & Hugh [30 October] suggested the club were growing frustrated with Moyes’ tactics, largely due to not getting the best out of some of the flair players at the club, including Mohammed Kudus who had to wait a long time for his first league start.

However, ultimately there is no arguing with the results on the pitch. The situation with Moyes is the same as with any top manager. If results aren’t going your way, the club will look for someone who can turn that around. At the moment, that is going in Moyes’ favour.

The boss also has plenty of credit in the bank from his European silverware victory last time out, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it is still a great unknown.
