Alan Shearer blasts West Ham for ‘flat’ performance in defeat v Brentford

Alan Shearer has blasted West Ham for their ‘flat’ performance in the 2-0 defeat against Brentford, but admits he understands why they were that way.

The Hammers fell to defeat at the Brentford Community Stadium, meaning they have won just once in their last four games in all competitions.

But after a huge game against Lyon in midweek, and another against the same opposition in the Europa League coming this week, Shearer told Match of the Day 2 that they deserved nothing from the game but their small squad is the reason for the performance.

“That’s the problem when he’s relying on a lot of the players to play in most of those games because that’s where the quality comes from,” he said.

“There’s no doubt about it, today they were tired, flat. They had no energy. They didn’t deserve anything from the game.

“But I sort of understand that because of the size of his squad.”

Cycle

Every time West Ham endure a poor run or have a poor performance, all attention immediately goes back to the lack of action during the transfer window in January.

While Moyes has largely been praised for his approach in the market during his time in charge, his failure to add anyone to this squad is criminal.

West Ham

It’s clear for all to see that the Hammers needed help for the second half of the season to continue their pursuit in the Europa League and the Premier League chase.

But this is a cycle that must be addressed because of where they want to be. Playing European football on a regular basis means that the Thursday-Sunday cycle is a thing they must get used to and deal with.

The issues are their own causing and aren’t an excuse for poor performances and a lack of quality, so while it’s fine to understand why they’re happening, something now needs to be done about it.
