Alan Shearer blasts ‘terrible’ Luis Diaz as West Ham United v Liverpool footage shown on MOTD
Alan Shearer has blasted Luis Diaz on Match of the Day after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at West Ham on Saturday
The Newcastle legend lambasted Diaz’s failure to stay onside at the start of a move which could well have seen West Ham concede a penalty after the Colombian’s eventual shot struck Angelo Ogbonna on the arm.
West Ham instead saw play pulled back for the offside decision against Diaz, and although Ogbonna and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola combined score an own goal which put Liverpool 2-1 up, the Irons responded with Michail Antonio‘s 77th-minute leveller.
In his analysis on MOTD on Saturday (27 April), Shearer said: “Terrible decision [by Diaz].
“You’re looking right across the pitch, there’s no need to be offside there. You can see where the defender is.”
After play continued, he added: “Then they work it, they might get away with a penalty because that probably would have been, but again a poor decision.”
West Ham halt losing run with spirited Liverpool draw
West Ham were on course to lose three Premier League matches in a row during the second half at the London Stadium, having seen their 1-0 lead at the break turned on its head.
Jarrod Bowen’s opener just before half-time was quickly cancelled out by Andy Robertson three minutes after the restart, and a goalmouth scramble just after the hour mark saw the ball ricochet off Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek and Areola to give Liverpool the lead.

This moment could well have spelt curtains for the Irons, given the rate at which they conceded goals in their 5-2 thrashing by Crystal Palace, but David Moyes’ side fought to stay in the game and drew level thanks to a bullet header from Antonio.
It wasn’t quite a victory for the Hammers, but having stopped the rot and dented Liverpool’s title hopes in the process, their 2-2 draw at the London Stadium is a game they can take plenty of positives from.
In other West Ham news, the club have been handed a major boost in appointing David Moyes’ replacement as a manager has made his future intentions clear.
