Alan Shearer blames Aaron Cresswell for goal in West Ham defeat to Manchester United

Alan Shearer believes Aaron Cresswell made a costly mistake in the build-up to the goal that saw West Ham fall to defeat against Manchester United.

The Hammers battled hard at Old Trafford and looked like they were going to come away with a point in a 0-0 draw before Marcus Rashford netted a winner for the hosts in the 93rd minute.

Alan Shearer was analysing the game on BBC Match of the Day and noticed that left-back Cresswell made a costly mistake in the build-up to the England winger scoring, and believes he should’ve done much better.

“Just watch Cresswell,” Shearer said. “Cresswell has got Rashford. He’s got him where he wants him, and then all of a sudden he puts his arm up, the thinks he may be offside. Then for whatever reason he loses him. He’s got to stick with him there and see that out.

“You can see the anger and hurt from David Moyes and rightly so because there was nothing in that game and I thought it was really harsh on them.”

Blow

The defeat to United is a huge blow for the Irons, who drop out of the top four with the result despite having played more games than all their rivals around them.

It was a heart-wrenching goal to concede after defending so well throughout, restricting Man United to just two shots on target up to that point.

West Ham

They didn’t really carry much of a threat going forward in the game though and Moyes will surely be wishing he’d gone on the offensive a little bit more.

That’s back-to-back defeats for the Hammers now and with the manager making it very clear that he hopes business can be done before the end of the month all attention now turns to that.

West Ham don’t return to action until February 5th against Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup, so many stars will be afforded a rest now before looking to start fresh.
