Aaron Cresswell out with hamstring injury – Early West Ham United team news v Sheffield United

David Moyes has revealed that West Ham United will be without Aaron Cresswell when they face Sheffield United on Saturday 30 September.

The Irons boss revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday (29 September) that the left-back wouldn’t be “ready yet” having picked up a hamstring injury during the Hammers Europa League win over TSC Backa Topola.

Cresswell missed West Ham’s win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup and the defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League, but Moyes did reveal that he was “coming on well” as he eyes a return to action sooner rather than later.

Discussing the rest of the team news for the clash at the London Stadium, he said: “We’re pretty much fine. We had a game in midweek and we’re making sure everybody is recovered from that and hopefully everyone is fit and well for Saturday.”

While Cresswell is a valuable addition to any West Ham squad he is part of, given his experience across several competitions throughout his career, the Hammers have plenty of cover for the 33-year-old, with Emerson the preferred option at left-back.

The former Ipswich Town full-back hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League so far this season, so it was unlikely that Moyes would have deployed him against Sheffield United, he would have been expected to feature in the Carabao Cup trip to Lincoln.

Cresswell’s injury allowed Ben Johnson a rare start for the Hammers however and that will have provided him with some valuable confidence on top of an extra bit of fitness to ensure he is ready to cover Emerson, should he be required on Saturday.

Moyes’ side should be heading into this one full of confidence, although they have lost their last two in the Premier League, there is very little shame in losing to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool and they will be hoping they can get their league season back on track with a win on Saturday.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side will be up for this one however, they’ll want to put to bed their 8-0 defeat to Newcastle last time out and that will ensure it will be far from easy for West Ham.
