Frank McAvennie: West Ham must sign a world-class goalkeeper in January

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie wants West Ham to sign a world-class goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

While addressing the needs of the squad and emphasising the two positions they need to strengthen in, he gave a rather left-field transfer suggestion.

Despite Lukasz Fabianksi’s good form in the Premier League and Alphonse Areola impressing in Europe, McAvennie has urged the Hammers to sign an upgrade on them.

He is of the opinion that keepers win the club over 10 points every season and it’s a priority position, much like defence and attack is for the Irons.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, he said, “They definitely need a centre-back and centre-forward, that’s for sure.

“You get a world-class keeper, I wouldn’t mind spending money on him.

“They go to Europe and get these keepers you’ve never heard of.

“Then you say to yourself, ‘Where did he come from?’ but keepers are really important.

“They win you 12 points a season, which is four games. That’s big.

“I’m not disrespecting Fabianski. He’s been there for a while.”

Fabianski has done well for the Irons this season, keeping four clean sheets with an impressive save percentage of 70.

The club are still to get him to sign an extension to his contract which expires at the end of the season.
