West Ham Women expert predicts 2-1 loss vs Manchester City

We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women’s expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…

Michelle Irons is expecting a tough game when West Ham Women travel to Academy Stadium on Sunday to face Manchester City, predicting a 2-1 defeat.

Olli Harder’s picked up their first victory of the new Women’s Super League campaign against Leicester City last Sunday following a 2-0 loss to Brighton and a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

One-time league winners Man City have not started the season well, winning just once and losing the other two.

However, they remain one of the best teams in the land having finished second in the WSL in every of the last four campaigns.

It is going to be a fiercely contested clash between both teams, and Michelle Irons reckons the hosts should pip West Ham to a narrow win.

She told West Ham Zone: “This game will be interesting as I’ve seen Man City struggling with injuries to some top players.

“Our team have played well the last couple of weeks bar some defensive issues, but we reacted well to it. Having said that, this fixture is always difficult for us and over the years we’ve shipped a lot of goals against them.

“I’d like to see us set up with the same team against Leicester, but maybe bring in Katerina Svitkova if she’s ready as she is a real attacking threat. I’m really pleased she’s back and playing her part.

“If we can keep the midfield stable and take our chances, I don’t see why we can’t get a surprise result.

“Man City are a top side in this league and have dominated for years and they will be expected to win this fixture.

“I hope we make it difficult for them. I won’t be able to watch this game as it’s scheduled for kick off exact same time as the men’s fixture against Brentford. I’ll be at that game in London.

“I’ve heard that we have some fans attending and sitting in E7 block, and I’m sure we will hear them singing. I’m going for a 2-1 loss unfortunately, but we can get back on track against Birmingham City with a full house at home.”

Difficult game

Man City opened their campaign with a 4-0 demolition of Everton before suffering 2-1 and 5-0 losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively.

They quickly bounced back by handing Leicester City a 6-0 drubbing in the quarterfinals of the F.A Women’s Cup on Wednesday, and the Ironesses have their work cut out for them.

A win or draw will be seen as a commendable result, and Harder will be setting up his team to make things hard for the opponents.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign English sensation with 18 goals/assists in 20/21.
