West Ham United: Alphonse Areola injury news as David Moyes not happy at Newcastle

David Moyes was not happy after a coming together between Dan Burn and Mohammed Kudus as he was speaking to the fourth official at half-time, according to Andy Kerr.

The beIN SPORTS journalist reported that the boss was deep in conversation with the official, as the Irons went on to somehow lose 4-3 at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, it was explained that Alphonse Areola appeared to pick up a groin injury at half-time, with Lukasz Fabianski, who was spotted warming up at the break, called upon to replace him.

Speaking live on beIN SPORTS [as shared via X], Kerr shared: “The home crowd were certainly not happy with the second West Ham goal. Jason Tindall, the Newcastle number two, tried to grab a word with referee Rob Jones as he made his way down the tunnel.

“Also, David Moyes wasn’t happy at all with the coming together between Dan Burn and Mohammed Kudus, he was in deep conversation with the fourth official about that one.

“Keep an eye out for the start of the second half, it looks like Alphonse Areola the West Ham goalkeeper is struggling with what might be a groin injury.”

David Moyes fuming at Alphonse Areola injury blow for West Ham

Fabianski conceded three times in the second half, throwing away a two-goal lead after goals from Michail Antonio and Mohammed Kudus had them 2-1 up at half-time before Jarrod Bowen made it 3-1, and Newcastle found late inspiration to win 4-3.

While Fabianski wasn’t at fault for any of the goals, the organisation and confidence that comes with having your first-choice backline and goalkeeper cannot be understated, so frustration will be high at West Ham.

Areola has received high praise for his performances this season, notably in the clash with Everton at Goodison Park, and fingers will be crossed at the London Stadium that the injury issue does not rule him out for too long.

These types of unexpected situations have provided another insight as to why the Hammers opted to extend Fabianski’s deal for an extra year, with any unforeseen issues with Areola needing an experienced backup.
