West Ham ready to get better of Arsenal says Jarrod Bowen
West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen has said the Irons are desperate to claim a result against Arsenal as both clubs fight for European football.
The Gunners currently occupy the last Champions League spot in the Premier League as Mikel Arteta looks to guide them back to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since the 2015/16 season.
West Ham meanwhile have a Europa League semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt coming up in midweek, but Bowen insists that won’t distract anyone at the Irons from today’s clash.
“West Ham versus Arsenal is a massive game,” he told club media (1 May).
“We respect Arsenal and they’re in a great bit of form at the minute and really pushing for that top-four place and we’re pushing to get into that top six, so it’ll be a great game.
“It’s a London derby, they’re in great form and we want to get the better of them.”
Although it’s easy for anyone following West Ham to get their eyes drawn to next week’s crucial second leg in Germany today’s game is also key in ensuring some form of European football is played at the London Stadium next season.
David Moyes’ men currently sit three points behind Manchester United with a game in hand, the Scot’s former side currently sixth and occupying the final Europe League qualification spot in an underwhelming campaign.
A win today would see the Hammers leapfrog into that position and could provide a crucial advantage heading into the final weeks of the season, allowing Moyes to channel most of his efforts into a Europa League triumph.
With a tough task ahead to overturn the deficit against Frankfurt, it’s vital the Irons also maintain full focus on securing a place in the same competition through the league.
