West Ham punished by silly mistakes says Roshane Thomas
The Athletic’s West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas says the Irons got what they deserved in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League.
Rob Holding and Gabriel both scored headers for the Gunners as West Ham lost further ground in the race for Europa League qualification next season.
And Thomas was left frustrated by the soft nature of both concessions, saying David Moyes’ men aren’t going to get anywhere if they keep conceding goals of that manner.
“Need to stop conceding sloppy goals,” he said on his Twitter account (1 May).
“It happened against Frankfurt and it cost West Ham today.”
Whilst there’s no shame in defeat to a solid Arsenal side there is disappointment in making it so easy for Mikel Arteta’s side to claim the three points.
Manuel Lanzini had a torrid time and somehow found himself up against the two Gunners defenders during their goals, something which is sure to drive David Moyes up the wall.
They will have to be far more organised for the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, with a 2-1 deficit to overturn against the Germans after a frustrating night in London.
Craig Dawson should be back in the team for that one and offer the Hammers some much-needed organisation at the back.
Grabbing the first goal is crucial for the psychological impact it will have, with going behind makes it seem an insurmountable task on the night.
To do that West Ham will have to ensure they keep it a lot tighter than they did against Arsenal.
In other West Ham news, Jarrod Bowen had this to say about Frankfurt ahead of the first leg at the London Stadium.
