Tomas Soucek slammed by media as Czechia suffer embarrassing defeat to Faroe Islands
Tomas Soucek has not had a good start to the 2025-26 campaign.
After Soucek missed West Ham’s recent matches due to a suspension, the midfielder would have been hoping to return to form in the international break.
The midfielder joined several other West Ham players in being called up for their countries at the start of October.
With the World Cup qualifiers now nearing their end, the Czechia captain would have been hoping to get his nation closer to the tournament in the summer.
However, a 0-0 draw against Croatia in the week, Czechia suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to the Faroe Islands on Sunday.

Tomas Soucek slammed as Czechia lose 2-1 to Faroe Islands
Going into Sunday’s match, Soucek had already been criticised for his display against Croatia.
However, the result was nowhere near as bad as the defeat to the Faroe Islands.
Coming up against a nation with a population of 54,719, Czechia were terrible, and didn’t manage their first shot on target until the 78th minute, when Adam Karabec equalised.
- Soucek is aiming to guide Czechia to the 2026 World Cup
- The captain of the nation was unable to lead his country to a victory in the October international break
- However, they are still extremely likely to finish second in their group
However, just three minutes later, the hosts retook the lead, to move to just one point off Soucek’s side, who currently occupy the playoff spot.
While it is highly unlikely that the Faroe Islands will pip Czechia to second, given that they will have to face Croatia in their final match, whereas Soucek’s side hosts Gibraltar, it is still an embarrassing defeat.
As a result, Sport.cz on 12 October did not hold back when analysing the captain’s performance on Sunday.

It read: “As captain, he led the national team to one of the most shameful results in history.
“Can you find anything to praise the captain for? No creativity. Few rebounds. He didn’t even make the usual contribution to the offence.”
Nuno Espirito Santo cannot recall Soucek to West Ham’s starting XI
Now that his suspension is over, Nuno Espirito Santo simply cannot recall the midfielder, given his recent run of form.
The Czech international has been awful of late, and would no doubt be a detriment to the Hammers if he did play a part in the Brentford tie.
Realistically, Soucek’s time at the top level is quickly coming to an end, and West Ham now need to start looking for a potential successor.
If not, they will be left further behind in the coming years.
