Tomas Soucek must be dropped after 3/10 – West Ham United player ratings v Southampton

West Ham United were held to a 1-1 draw after a controversial Southampton goal in their Sunday afternoon clash at St Mary’s in the Premier League.

The Hammers went behind controversially when Kyle Walker-Peters took a throw in with his foot well over the line, which eventually led to Romain Perraud’s strike deflecting into the net, but VAR waved off any complaints.

Gianluca Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta went close several times but couldn’t find an equaliser, and the teams went into the half-time break separated by that goal.

A brilliant bit of individual quality from Declan Rice saw him play a one-two and then curl the ball beyond the goalkeeper to equalise midway through the second half. But there were to be no more goals or clear chances as they shared the points.

Here is how West Ham Zone rated the performance of each player from the game..

Lukasz Fabianski – 6/10

Could do nothing about the goal but was assured at set-pieces and his distribution was good too. Giving Moyes a reason to keep him in the Premier League side, so hard to complain too much.

Ben Johnson – 5/10

Played out of position at centre-back again to help cover for the problems in the squad, but it’s clear he’s not very comfortable there. Struggled with the pace and physicality of Che Adams, although he grew into the game as it went on.

Thilo Kehrer – 6/10

The only natural centre-back on the pitch for the Hammers and he looked it. Good in possession and strong aerially, he organised everyone around him well and it led to a pretty good defensive display overall.

Aaron Cresswell – 6/10

Cresswell looks to be really growing into this position as a third centre-back and this was a good performance from him. He filled in well when Emerson pushed forward from wing-back and was composed throughout.

Vladimir Coufal – 5/10

Coufal tried to use his energy up and down the flank, but it does seem as though his legs have gone now. He never really got going in an attacking sense, although defensively he held his own for much of the contest.

West Ham

Declan Rice – 8/10

The skipper led by example once again. The team was struggling after another slow start but he dragged them by the collar with him and turned a sloppy performance into a good one. What a player, and what a goal.

Tomas Soucek – 4/10

Another poor showing from the Czech giant, who was poor on the ball and really passive in midfield. Surely it’s time now for Downes to get a chance in the Premier League? He can’t be much worse than this on a consistent basis.

Emerson Palmieri – 6/10

Great pace and energy on the wing and a threat from out wide with his crossing dribbling. He’s got a good connection with Scamacca in attack, but his final ball let him down for the most part.

Jarred Bowen – 6/10

Energetic and lively again and his partnership with Scamacca is coming on the more they play together, but he never quite got up to speed or got a chance to add to his tally for the game.

Lucas Paqueta – 5/10

Moments of magic throughout once again, but in reality he struggled to make an impact on this one. Came really close to scoring in the first half with a header that grazed the post, but outside of that was quiet.

Gianluca Scamacca – 7/10

A performance that had everything but a goal. His link up play and touch was excellent, his passing good, his movement sharp but unfortunately his finishing was ever so slightly off as he went really close three times.

Substitutes

Said Benrahma – 7/10

Came on and immediately made a difference to the attack with his delicate touches and intricate play. Got the assist for Rice’s goal and is surely knocking on the door for a start in midweek.

Michail Antonio – N/A
