TNT Sports called out over Cody Gakpo interview after West Ham v Liverpool

Rob Palmer was perplexed as to why TNT Sports did not ask Cody Gakpo about a contentious issue in the West Ham versus Liverpool match.

Gakpo was involved in a bizarre incident in the second half of Saturday’s (27 April) 2-2 draw at London Stadium.

The Dutchman went to pounce on the ball after Alphonse Areola chucked it out, but the referee blew his whistle before he could do so.

There was confusion as to whether play was active or if a free-kick had been awarded to West Ham.

Gakpo was interviewed by TNT Sports after the game, but he was asked four generic questions, rather than anything on this incident.

Sky Sports commentator Palmer posted on X [27 April]: “Did I miss something? Did they just interview Gakpo and not ask him about the incident?”

West Ham grind out draw v Liverpool

The atmosphere was as flat as ever at London Stadium prior to kick-off, but Jarrod Bowen’s goal just before half-time thankfully changed that.

Even after Liverpool came out for the second half fired up and scored twice, United stuck to the task and rescued a point through Michail Antonio.

It was a strange game in many ways, yet it ultimately proved good value for money for those who were in attendance.

The Gakpo incident in question was bizarre and thankfully went in West Ham’s favour. There was real confusion, not helped by the officials.

Had the Liverpool forward fired the ball into the net, this may well have been a bigger talking point at full-time.

Or indeed had there been more riding on the contest, with the Reds’ title hopes effectively already over even prior to today.

As for West Ham, those European hopes are now looking even slimmer, but you cannot criticise the players on the back of a battling display.
