Sky Sports pundit stunned by ‘ridiculous’ Southampton goal v West Ham, says David Moyes will be furious

Lee Hendrie cannot believe Romain Perraud’s goal for Southampton against West Ham stood at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

Referee Peter Bankes blocked Jarrod Bowen from beating Perraud to the ball on the edge of the penalty area before the Saints player fired in and scored.

Sky Sports pundit Hendrie was stunned that the goal wasn’t disallowed, saying that David Moyes will be raging over the decision for it to stand.

“The ref’s massively in the way, massively. But I don’t know what they’ll do here,” said Hendrie on Sky Sports News on Sunday (16 October, 02:20pm).

“As they clear it, he gets in the way of it. It’s ridiculous. What do they do here?

“I don’t know if it hit him, it looks like they just came across each other.

“I tell you what, I want to see what Moyes says after because he will be furious with that.

“It impedes Jarrod Bowen to even go and make a challenge. There’ll be questions asked.”

Crazy

How did that goal stand?

Kyle Walker-Peters was on the pitch when he took the throw-in for starters.

But for the referee to block a player off from making a challenge and then allowing the goal that followed is criminal.

If the ball hits the referee, play is stopped. Surely if the referee collides with a player then play should be stopped too, especially if it’s with a player who’s directly involved in play.

And then, on top of all that, VAR missed Walker-Peters’ foot being across the touchline when he took the throw-in, something which is a black and white issue in football.

Moyes will rightly be raging – everyone connected with West Ham is.

And even neutrals like former Aston Villa player Hendrie can see the injustice when something like this happens.

The PGMOL will have a lot to answer for after this but you know that there’ll be nothing but silence and the obligatory line from Dermot Gallagher on Sky Sports where he says that it was right for the goal to stand.

It’s boring. It’s happening time and time again across the Premier League and across English football.
