Richard Keys and Andy Gray react to West Ham United controversy v Chelsea
Richard Keys and Andy Gray believe West Ham United should have had a penalty against Chelsea on Saturday 21 September.
The Irons crashed to a 3-0 defeat against their London rivals, with Nicolas Jackson scoring two early goals before Crysencio Summerville was dragged back in the box.
The PGMOL shared that the contact from Wesley Fofana was “fleeting”, something that the duo disagreed with after reviewing the footage.
Speaking live on beIN Sports, as shared on X, both Gray and Keys, as well as David Moyes, agreed it should have been given.
Gray did admit there were initial questions over the incident, saying: “Because it was one of those where did he have him long enough, did he not have him long enough? One way or another.”
Keys then put it simply, “Well, let me put it to you both, did he affect him his run, then it’s a penalty.”
It was then finished off with Gray stating, “If he’d have given it, they wouldn’t have overturned it.”
West Ham United controversy does not hide Chelsea thrashing
Regardless of what you think about this decision, West Ham were simply embarrassing at the London Stadium, in what was meant to be a fierce derby.
Julen Lopetegui is on his way to some very early pressure from David Sullivan and the board because his decision-making has been nothing short of shocking so far.
Setting up the team in the same way with Konstantinos Mavropanos, Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez in these roles in not good enough and it shouldn’t take this long to find that out.
Five games in, things are looking very bleak, regardless of the opponents faced so far and the number of new signings being brought in.
After Tim Steidten challenged Summerville to have an impact like Mohammed Kudus [The Athletic], it’s hard not to feel slightly disappointed.
Of course, after one Premier League start this season, time has to be given, but unlike the attacker, Lopetegui may not get that after this.
