Richard Keys and Andy Gray in agreement as Julen Lopetegui claim made at West Ham United
Richard Keys has compared Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham record to David Moyes’ end-of-season run last term.
The Hammers have won just two of their first eight Premier League matches under the new manager, only beating Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town so far.
With the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday 19 October making it four defeats, also losing to Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa, West Ham have dropped even further down the Premier League table.
Speaking via beIN Sports on Saturday (19 October), Keys said: “Sixth and seventh-placed finishes, a European trophy. Granted, Moyes won only two of his last eight, but £127million spent later, West Ham have won only two out of eight under Lopetegui. Be careful what you wish for.
Andy Gray replied: “Absolutely. Could not agree more. What more could Moyes do more?”
West Ham United sent warning over Julen Lopetegui replacing David Moyes
Fans at the London Stadium have already learned that the grass is not always greener on the other side, especially when it concerns Moyes’ tenure.
The Scot was called upon to save the Hammers from Manuel Pellegrini after sacking him in 2018, and some fans are already calling for him to return following such a slow start to the campaign.
West Ham also won just two of their last eight games of the 2023/24 season, beating Luton Town and Wolves, but also managing to draw 1-1 with Tottenham.
Lopetegui certainly has a lot to prove to the fans if he is to remain at the London Stadium beyond the current season, and it does not seem unlikely that Moyes would come back to the club in his place.
It remains to be seen how the majority of fans would react to that hypothetical change already, given his sour exit during the summer, but something drastic must change soon.
