Premier League make announcement after West Ham vs Tottenham controversy

West Ham’s London derby clash against Tottenham hasn’t been without controversy.

Before the clash, West Ham and Tottenham scarves were banned at the London Stadium with the hope of keeping tensions to a minimum.

This was one measure put in place as Graham Potter and West Ham prepared to play host to Tottenham and Thomas Frank in E20.

It is fair to say that the atmosphere around the ground was already charged when Mohammed Kudus returned to East London.

This was only made worse by a disallowed goal, which has since been clarified by a much-needed statement from the Premier League.

Cristian Romero goal ruled out for Tottenham vs West Ham

It is fair to say that after West Ham beat Nottingham Forest 3-0, they had high hopes of another positive result after the international break.

There have been chances for both sides as Spurs have showcased plenty of energy and created chances that have troubled the Irons.

This has certainly been the case from set-pieces, with corners causing particular trouble for Mads Hermansen in between the sticks.

The ball did breach the Dane’s posts mid-way through the first half when Cristian Romero headed home from a Kudus corner at the London Stadium.

Referee Jarred Gillett ruled the goal out on the pitch, much to the confusion of those inside the arena, a decision which was upheld by VAR at Stockley Park.

To clarify, the Premier League Match Centre X account has shared an update on 13 September, blaming Micky van de Ven for a foul on Kyle Walker-Peters for the decision.

The statement reads: “The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR, with it deemed that Van de Ven pushed Walker-Peters in the back and impacted his ability to play the ball.”

West Ham got away with one vs Tottenham

There is no getting away from the fact that this was a hugely controversial decision, and arguably the wrong one from Gillett and Co.

Both Van de Ven and Walker-Peters were guilty of pushing and pulling each other, with a foul against either always likely to be seen as harsh.

Potter will be delighted that the decision has ultimately gone in his side’s favour after what had been a back-and-forth affair to that point.

It will certainly be interesting to see if this decision is explained further in the near future, as Tottenham’s fury was clear for all to see.
