Premier League make announcement about major West Ham incident vs Brighton

West Ham were involved in a breathless first half against Brighton at the London Stadium on Tuesday night.

Although the Irons went in at the break 2-1 ahead, things could have gone a lot differently if it wasn’t for VAR and for a ridiculous Brighton penalty miss.

Jarrod Bowen scored in the 10th minute to put West Ham ahead against the run of play, before Max Kilman conceded a penalty by bringing down Yankuba Minteh in the box.

Danny Welbeck scored that spot-kick in the 32nd minute, but four minutes later, Lucas Paqueta‘s foul on Lewis Dunk led to another Brighton penalty.

Fortunately for Nuno Espirito Santo, Welbeck struck the crossbar with a failed Panenka penalty, leading to a mass confrontation among players, which Keith Hackett believes will lead to both West Ham and Brighton being charged by the FA.

West Ham then get their own penalty

Welbeck and Mateus Fernandes were both booked for their roles in the aggro, but the controversy wasn’t finished there as Nuno fought to keep himself in his job at West Ham.

Just as the stoppage time at the end of the first half started, Callum Wilson’s shot at goal was blocked by Dunk.

Although he didn’t initially see it, Michael Salisbury was sent to the pitch-side monitor to re-examine the incident, in which Dunk clearly stopped Wilson’s goal-bound effort with his arm.

The Premier League Match Centre then released an announcement on X, confirming the VAR overturn, which led to Salisbury telling those inside the London Stadium: “After review, Brighton number five commits a handball offence inside the penalty area.

Final decision is penalty and yellow card.”

How many penalties have West Ham and Brighton had this season?

Only Brentford have won more penalties than Brighton in the Premier League this season.

Those two conceded by West Ham in the first half on Tuesday night were the fourth and fifth won by the Seagulls, while Keith Andrews’ Brentford have had seven.

As for West Ham, that penalty before half-time was their second of the campaign, with Paqueta scoring from the spot in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in August.

And some fans might be wondering what the record for the most penalties ever awarded in a Premier League match is.

Jon Moss awarded four penalties in Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Tottenham in October 2014, while four penalties were also awarded in a 4-4 draw between Bradford and Derby in the 1999-20 season.
