Paul Merson raises West Ham concern despite win vs Burnley – ‘I’d be shocked’

Paul Merson is not convinced by West Ham despite two consecutive victories for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

West Ham beat Burnley 3-2 in a tense encounter at the London Stadium to move level on points with the Clarets.

The Hammers are now 18th in the Premier League, but are only in the relegation zone on goal difference, after the victory.

West Ham seem to have momentum on their side after the results against Newcastle and the newly-promoted team, but Merson is not having it.

Paul Merson does not believe that West Ham will kick on

The expectation is that West Ham will kick on and turn over a new leaf with Nuno’s leadership.

However, Merson does not think that will be the case, and cannot see them picking up any points in their next three matches.

Host Simon Thomas stated that the Irons play Bournemouth, Liverpool and Manchester United after the international break, and asked Merson whether he though Nuno is having a positive impact.

Speaking on Sky Sports (17:26 pm), Merson replied: “I’m not convinced, I thought for big parts of the game Burnley were the better team.

“It was only when they got confident, when they opened it up and played sort of you have an attack, we have an attack, West Ham have got better players going forward.

“I’m not too sure yet, the games you just reeled off to me, I’d be shocked if they got any points from those three games.”

West Ham need to keep up the momentum

Merson may well be right, the E20 outfit may struggle to pick up points from those matches, but they cannot allow that attitude to be in their minds.

They need to go into each game believing that they can secure victory, rather than thinking there is no chance.

They need to try and keep as much momentum as possible, to get away from the drop zone and ease the pressure on the board.

West Ham supporters have been protesting against David Sullivan and Karren Brady regularly, and that will not improve until results get better and there is no danger of them dropping to the Championship.

If Nuno and his players feel the same way as Merson, they will likely end up in the second tier, so they simply cannot believe that.
