Paul Merson predicts defeat for West Ham v Chelsea

Paul Merson has predicted that West Ham United will suffer defeat against Chelsea in their upcoming Premier League showdown this weekend.

Both sides will meet in Premier League matchday six at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon (03 September), looking to keep this small unbeaten run going.

Merson, in a column for Sportkeeda, stated that despite the Blues’ struggles, they should’ve enough quality to defeat the Hammers, predicting a 2-1 win for the home side.

West Ham

“This is a massive game for both teams,” he said. “West Ham did well against Tottenham, and they fought back in the second half.

“Chelsea have got to win this game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this match is decided by the odd goal as well.”

Big

West Ham’s season started on a poor note where they suffered three back-to-back defeats. However, the last two results where they managed to win against Aston Villa and secured a draw against an in-form Tottenham Hotspur will give the players a lot of confidence going forward.

David Moyes and fans will be hoping that the players will be able to continue producing similar kinds of performances in the upcoming matches as well, especially after having a slow start to their league campaign.

West Ham

Looking at the record of both teams would not give the Hammers fans a lot of hope as in 52 matches in the Premier League between the sides, the Blues clearly have an edge with 28 wins compared to suffering 15 defeats.

However, last season, the pendulum slightly shifted with the Irons winning a five-goal thriller while at home whereas they suffered a close defeat in the away fixture with a score of 1-0 [Transfermarkt].
