Mateus Fernandes exceptional as 3/10 shouldn’t play again – West Ham ratings vs Brighton

West Ham secured a 1-1 draw against Brighton in the Premier League after being denied a late victory on the road.

Jarrod Bowen thought he won the match with his 73rd-minute strike as Nuno Espirito Santo threatened to continue his excellent record against Brighton.

However, just when they were ready to celebrate all three points, Georginio Rutter broke West Ham hearts with a controversial equaliser in the 91st minute after sustaining some late pressure.

A draw at the AMEX Stadium leaves the Hammers 18th in the Premier League table and two points adrift of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

Mateus Fernandes was excellent vs Brighton

Nuno has a superstar emerging at West Ham in the shape of Mateus Fernandes, and he continued his excellent form against Brighton.

The 21-year-old offered his usual energy and dynamism in midfield, while covering every blade of grass and winning possession back.

Fernandes won a whopping 16 of his 17 ground duels and made one key pass in a game that lacked quality in the final third until Bowen’s goal.

During a disappointing transfer window under Graham Potter, supporters will be delighted that West Ham signed Fernandes from Southampton, as he boasts the potential to become one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

Guido Rodriguez was disappointing

Eyebrows were raised when Nuno named his West Ham starting lineup against Brighton, as it saw Freddie Potts and Soungoutou Magassa get dropped for Guido Rodriguez and Paqueta.

Potts has been amazing since coming into the lineup, and the academy graduate was unfortunate to lose his place on Sunday.

Rodriguez, who has been linked with an exit from the London Stadium, struggled to show the Hammers why he deserves more chances.

The 31-year-old was a passenger all afternoon and looked off the pace in midfield with zero tackles won and no tackles made. As a result, Potts replaced him on the hour mark.

West Ham Zone rated the players out of 10 below;

Alphonse Areola – 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6

Max Kilman – 6

Konstantinos Mavropanos – 5

Jean-Clair Todibo – 7

El Hadji Malick Diouf – 5

Mateus Fernandes – 8

Guido Rodriguez – 3

Lucas Paqueta – 6

Crysencio Summerville – 7

Jarrod Bowen – 7
