Lucas Paqueta destroyed for ‘nonsensical’ howler in West Ham win vs Burnley

Lucas Paqueta picked up a silly booking for West Ham United against Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Scott Parker’s team travelled to the London Stadium on 8 November, with the Hammers looking to get out of the drop zone.

Nuno Espirito Santo is tasked with avoiding relegation from the Premier League, and the win over Newcastle United on 2 November certainly gave the Irons a much-needed boost.

However, the Brazil international gave the former Nottingham Forest manager an early headache in the 25th minute after his foul on Florentino Luis resulted in a yellow card, although the East London club eventually won 3-2 after goals from Callum Wilson, Tomas Soucek and Kyle Walker-Peters cancelled out Zian Flemming’s 35th-minute strike.

Nuno Espirito Santo to be furious with Lucas Paqueta at West Ham

Pat Nevin blasted Paqueta for his “nonsensical” tackle that led to him going into the referee’s book.

The former Chelsea winger isn’t the greatest fan of some of the negative aspects of the midfielder’s game, which were on show at the London Stadium.

There was arguably no need for the Brazilian national to commit the offence in an area that Burnley couldn’t have done much from.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on 8 November at 15:28, Nevin said: “Lucas Paqueta follows through, absolutely nonsensical and now you lose him for the next game. Not that impressive from Paqueta. We know he’s got his qualities, but there are negatives in there as well.”

Callum Wilson has once again started amid Niclas Fullkrug’s injury woes, and the veteran striker has got to take his chances after struggling for game time in previous matches.

Beating Burnley has taken the East London club level on points with them, as Josh Cullen’s stoppage-time goal was nothing but a consolation for the visitors, and hopefully, it will kickstart their campaign after a dreadful start under Graham Potter.

How Nuno Espirito Santo can replace Lucas Paqueta

Lucas Paqueta will be suspended after being booked against Burnley, with the midfielder racking up five yellow cards.

The West Ham star was undoubtedly stupid to continue putting in niggling fouls after being pulled up on a couple of occasions in the opening 45 minutes and will serve a one-match ban against Bournemouth.

Soucek was once again the hero at the London Stadium, and he could potentially bring some solidity and aerial threat to the Hammers for their trip to the Vitality Stadium after the international break on 22 November.

It remains to be seen how the coming weeks progress, with Nuno surely hoping none of his players pick up injuries away from the London Stadium.
