Jamie Carragher slams Pablo Fornals after first-half incident in West Ham clash v Everton

Jamie Carragher slammed Pablo Fornals for being “out of position” in the first half of West Ham versus Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Fornals, 25, was shown a yellow card by referee Stuart Attwell after a challenge on Andros Townsend in the middle of the park.

Alex Iwobi’s pass from the left-back area threatened to launch a counter-attack for the home side and just as Townsend got to the ball in the middle of the pitch, Fornals caught him with a slide tackle and brought him to the ground.

Fornals didn’t look as though he believed it was a yellow card, claiming he’d won the ball but Carragher disagreed.

Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League after the first-half incident, the Liverpool legend said: “He just found himself on the wrong side of Townsend.

“He comes flying in, he’s been caught out of position.

“Everton counter-attacking quick.

“When you go to ground like that you’re stopping a real good counter-attack so that’s what’s going to happen, a yellow card.”

Got to do better

If West Ham weren’t being so wasteful in the attack, they would not be handing Everton such opportunities to counter-attack.

Fornals had to be booked for that.

Yes, the contact was very minimal but it was a late slide tackle that can easily be deemed as a tactical foul.

He stopped Everton’s counter-attack before it got too dangerous. It was a good yellow card to win, at the end of the day.

David Moyes’ attack has been too easy to defend against so far with the home side’s defence dealing with just about everything thrown their way.

We need to show more creativity and think outside the box a bit more in order to make a breakthrough because Jordan Pickford seems to be in decent form.

Faster movement, quicker decisions and a willingness to shoot once in a good position will help massively in the second half.
