Jamie Carragher shocked by Ollie Watkins incident in West Ham United 4-1 loss v Aston Villa

Jamie Carragher was shocked at an early miss from Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins in their match with West Ham.

The England international had a fine chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute of the Premier League clash on Sunday (22 October).

Watkins fired his shot wide, but he quickly made amends by assisting Douglas Luiz before scoring himself in the 4-1 win.

“I can’t believe he’s missed!” Carragher said on Sky Sports Main Event (4.47pm). “Watkins hasn’t been involved too much in the game. He doesn’t get too many touches but when he does he usually delivers.

“What a first touch as well! It couldn’t have been any better for him and he completely drags his shot!”

It was absolutely a big miss from the Villa ace, but as is the case with all good strikers, Watkins quickly made amends.

And he made amends in fine fashion thanks to his important assist for Luiz’s long-range opener, with the midfielder then adding a second from the spot.

Hammers ace Jarrod Bowen did his best to get the visitors back in the game with his goal, but Watkins ensured there was no chance of a comeback with his stunning goal.

Substitute Leon Bailey then secured all three points with an impressive strike, much to the dismay of the West Ham defence and manager David Moyes.

It was a fantastic display from the home team, who now sit fifth in the Premier League table, just one point outside the top four.

West Ham meanwhile have dropped to ninth place in the league standings with the damaging defeat, with 14 points from their nine matches so far.

In other West Ham news, one Hammers-linked player is weighing up offers, with a European giant “leading the charge” for his signature.
