Jamie Carragher rips into ’embarrassing’ West Ham United defending after what happened in first half v Arsenal live on Sky Sports

Jamie Carragher was absolutely furious with West Ham for the way they defended for Arsenal’s second goal in the first half of their clash on Sunday (16 April).

The Hammers were 2-0 down inside the opening ten minutes after goals from Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard, with some poor defending giving up the lead easily.

And while doing commentary on the game for Sky Sports (16 April, 14:10), Carragher said the way West Ham defended for the second goal in particular was “embarrassing”.

“Can he deliver Martinelli? Yes he can, as he has done all season,” he said.

“He had one go with the outside of his foot, then Xhaka said have another go. Swing it in.

“The space he’s [Odegaard] got is embarrassing though, from West Ham’s point of view. All get dragged inside and he just passes it into the net. He’s not going to miss from there.

“This is a long way back for West Ham now. We saw Liverpool do it last week, but I’m not sure West Ham can.”

Horrendous

What on Earth is going on during the week at West Ham that we can prepare for a game and start it in that way?

The fact we were playing in the Europa Conference League a few days ago simply isn’t an excuse because we made a lot of changes to the starting lineup so they were all fresh. This is a weakened Arsenal team too, by the way.

West Ham

There’s just no excuse for the players to be asleep so early in a game and to fold under so little pressure, regardless of how good Arsenal have been this season.

We were incredibly lucky to get on the scoresheet and give ourselves a chance for the second half thanks to Said Benrahma’s penalty, which makes amends for his poor defending.

But he needs to do more, and so do the rest of the team if we want to get anything from this game. But either way, the defending in those opening ten minutes is simply unacceptable.
