David Moyes must swallow pride with Edson Alvarez decision in Man City v West Ham United

David Moyes needs to drag off James Ward-Prowse at half-time against Manchester City after a terrible first-half display for the West Ham United midfielder.

Ward-Prowse allowed Phil Foden to easily step inside him and curl in City’s opener a little over a minute into Sunday’s (19 May) final-day showdown.

The England international then failed to cut out Jeremy Doku’s pass, which Foden smashed home to double City’s advantage at the Etihad Stadium.

West Ham being outclassed by Manchester City

Ward-Prowse was undoubtedly the weak link in what was a one-sided first half up until Mohammed Kudus’ moment of genius shortly before the break to make it 2-1 out of nowhere.

Moyes has persisted with Ward-Prowse and Tomas Soucek in the engine room, with Edson Alvarez either being used as a substitute or not used at all in recent games.

That has coincided with comments made by Alvarez regarding West Ham’s style of play, as well as Moyes warning the midfielder over his poor disciplinary record.

To be frank, though, Moyes needs to swallow his pride and bring on Alvarez at half-time if United are to give themselves a fighting chance of pulling off a shock result.

Edson Alvarez has impressed since arriving at West Ham

West Ham were never expected to take anything back to East London result-wise, but Moyes has a chance to pick up an unlikely point if he he is smart with his decision-making.

The Scotsman must therefore turn to his bench before the second half and hope Alvarez can offer more than Ward-Prowse.
