Darren Ambrose slams ‘dangerous’ incident in West Ham v Sheffield United live on Sky Sports

Sky Sports pundit Darren Ambrose slammed Sheffield United striker Rhian Brewster for his “dangerous” tackle on West Ham defender Emerson Palmieri live on air.

In a dramatic game that finished 2-2 on Sunday (21 January), Blades striker Brewster – who had come on as a second-half substitute – was dismissed for a rash tackle on the Hammers full-back.

Ambrose initially wasn’t sure what had caused melee between the teams but after seeing it back on a replay labelled it a “terrible” tackle.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Sunday show (21 January, 15:48), Ambrose said: “I don’t think it needed all the melee it caused to be honest. It doesn’t look nice actually seeing the replay, it could be a red card actually.

“The full-back’s trying to clear it, he’s trying to block, it doesn’t look nice. I was completely wrong in why I thought there was a melee or there shouldn’t have been.

“It was a dangerous challenge. He’s not been on long, not done anything apart from this terrible challenge.”

Had to go

Fair play to Ambrose for accepting that he was wrong initially on this challenge because frankly it was an awful tackle and Brewster was rightly sent off.

At that point in the game it should have been the moment that the match was done for West Ham, who were leading 2-1 at Bramall Lane and had the extra man advantage.

As it was some late drama saw Vladimir Coufal also sent off and allowed Oli McBurnie to rescue a point from the penalty spot for the home side in a disappointing end to the afternoon for the Hammers.

West Ham

It will leave David Moyes smarting, especially given Brewster’s awful tackle should have been the point in the match where his side could just comfortably see out the remainder of the game with a minimum of fuss.

They now have to lick their wounds from the late setback and prepare for their next fixture with Bournemouth on 1 February.
