Danny Mills fumes at what ‘Really Poor’ Wan-Bissaka did in Newcastle v West Ham
Danny Mills was left fuming at Aaron Wan-Bissaka for failing to clear and gifting Joe Willock a chance in West Ham United’s 2-0 win at Newcastle on Monday.
The Hammers were under the cosh early in the game at St James’ Park (25 November) but took the lead through Tomas Soucek’s header.
Just minutes later, a cross was barely headed away by Wan-Bissaka, who had his blushes spared by Willock firing wide and his defending left Mills fuming on talkSPORT (25 November, 8:15 pm).
He said: “It was a really poor header from Wan-Bissaka, didn’t really get anything on it, just sort of glanced it into his path. Got to defend better than that.”
West Ham performance poor against Newcastle despite win
West Ham were fortunate to beat Newcastle on Monday night, having been camped in their own half for the majority of the first half and generally very poor.
The Magpies had a goal disallowed for offside when Alexander Isak attempted to break the needlessly high line of the Hammers’ defence which caused them their own problems all night.
Wan-Bissaka’s poor attempt at a clearance was just one of several examples throughout the encounter where the Irons failed to clear their lines properly, allowing Newcastle to pile extra pressure on them – albeit he made amends by scoring the Irons’ second after the break.
Jean Todibo fell victim to a similar situation, this time seeing his embarrassment saved by Lukas Fabianski denying Anthony Gordon, but ultimately the defensive lapses weren’t punished on a big night for the Hammers and their beleaguered boss Julen Lopetegui.

On a different night it might have gone a different way and there is still improvement that will need to be made but it’s the big stat at the top that always counts and West Ham got the win.
It will keep Lopetegui in his job for now although it provides him with minimal extra credit in the bank.
