Carragher rages at ‘absolutely ridiculous’ Edson Alvarez incident in West Ham loss v Liverpool

Jamie Carragher blasted Edson Alvarez for his “stupid” sending-off in West Ham United’s 5-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Alvarez, 26, was shown a second yellow card for a late sliding challenge on Mo Salag in the 77th minute after previously being booked for another slide tackle on Kostas Tsimikas 11 minutes earlier.

Although it was 3-1 at the time, the Hammers had been looking good in the second half but Alvarez’s early bath all but ended any hopes of a comeback and it also means he’ll miss his side’s clash with Brentford in the Premier League this weekend.

“West Ham are so close to getting a goal – and they probably deserve a goal in the second half,” said Carragher on Sky Sports Main Event after the red card (25 September, 9:32pm).

“It’s a really stupid decision when you’re on a yellow card.

“There are two or three players around Mo Salah, it’s not on his own.

“It certainly wasn’t last-ditch. It takes the game away from West Ham now with them being down to 10 men.”

At 9:50pm, Carragher added that it was an “absolutely ridiculous” red card.

Will Edson Alvarez miss West Ham clash v Brentford?

It’s been a really poor start to the season for West Ham, who ‘won the summer transfer window’ in the eyes of many punters.

Julen Lopetegui is facing some early pressure at the London Stadium, especially now there’s next to no hope of any silverware with the Carabao Cup arguably the best competition for a team of the Hammers’ stature to win.

At 3-1 and with over 10 minutes left, the game was salvageable.

Michail Antonio’s introduction in the second half changed the game for the better for the Irons.

However, Alvarez’s mindless lunge on Salah saw him sent down the tunnel and led to the result being an absolute embarrassment for the Hammers.

He’ll now miss West Ham’s clash with Brentford in West London.

However, even if he was available, there’s a chance Lopetegui would overlook the Mexican international because he’s had quite a torrid start to the 2024/25 campaign.
