Angelo Ogbonna picks up injury during West Ham friendly with Celtic

West Ham United secured a comfortable 6-2 win against Celtic in a friendly clash this evening (Saturday) at Parkhead, but it could have come at a cost.

Italian centre-back Angelo Ogbonna went off early in the game injured, and manager David Moyes would be left sweating on his fitness.

Trusted West Ham insider ExWHUemployee was asked for an update by a fan – Simon Lee – on Twitter and he replied on his personal account.

West Ham

Massive blow?

Ogbonna spent just five minutes on the pitch before he was replaced by Issa Diop, and while withdrawing him immediately could have been a precaution, we are afraid it does not look good.

The Italian would most likely have played on if it was nothing to worry about, and West Ham will be providing an official update on the injury soon.

The Hammers start the 2021-22 Premier League campaign on August 15 with a trip to Newcastle United.

It is three weeks away and we cannot afford to be without one of our most influential players.

Ogbonna featured in 28 top-flight games last term and was unarguably our best centre-back.

Should he sustain a serious injury, Moyes would be left with Diop and Craig Dawson as our only senior options in central defence, and that is not particularly encouraging.

West Ham

Hopefully, it is not a serious knock, but the lack of depth in the position needs to be addressed as quickly as possible this summer.

We surely cannot rely on just three centre-backs for the whole of a campaign, with Europa League engagement adding to an already busy schedule.
