Andy Townsend reacts to Jarrod Bowen goal in West Ham v Manchester City

Andy Townsend has showered heaps of praise on Jarrod Bowen after West Ham took the lead against Manchester City on Sunday at the London Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side controlled possession and dominated the opening half, but it was the home side who tore them apart from a sharp counter-attack.

Bowen rounded off the keeper and scored a spectacular goal as the Hammers lead by 1-0. Bowen scored towards the end to give his side a 2-0 lead at the break.

West Ham

The popular Sky Sports pundit was left stunned by the movement of Bowen for the first goal, and he described it as “wow”.

“He is onside. That’s good to go. That’s some finish. Wow. Game on,” said Townsend, while co-commentating for the world feed (May 15, 14:23).

Superb

David Moyes has been absolutely spot on with his tactics.

He knows that it’s ludicrous to play an open game against City as they can score any time.

The Hammers have been solid at the back. They kept their concentration throughput and most importantly they didn’t panic.

They allowed City to enjoy possession and even circle around the final third.

West Ham

West Ham waited for the right break and when the opportunity came they hit back on the counter-attack.

It has happened with City a lot this season. With so much possession, sometimes they have left gaps open, and that is where West Ham have capitalised.

They didn’t have an answer to the direct approach from the Hammers, with Michail Antonio playing a big role.

While there’s a lot of football left to be played, the two goals from Bowen will be celebrated on Merseyside. If the Hammers can hold on, it could have a huge bearing in the title race.

In other West Ham news, the boss could do with offloading this ageing defender to make room for new arrivals.
